How to Use Google Search Console: a Practical Guide

Make Google Search Console Your SEO Control Room

Google Search Console is Google’s free platform for showing how it finds, understands and displays your website. When learning how to use Google Search Console, treat it as a practical control room, not a wall of mysterious graphs.

We recommend setting up a Domain property where possible, verifying ownership, submitting your XML sitemap and giving the right marketing and web team members access. It will not show every keyword or visitor, but the data comes directly from Google. For a Brussels consultancy, a small number of searches for a specific service may produce better leads than a broad, high-volume term. September is a sensible moment to review this data before Q4 campaigns and seasonal website changes begin.

Read Performance Reports for Useful Clues

The Performance report shows four helpful measures: clicks, impressions, average click-through rate and average position. Clicks are visits from Google Search. Impressions show how often a result appeared. Click-through rate shows how often people chose it. Average position is useful for spotting trends, not arguing over a decimal point. Google is offering clues, not report cards.

Filter results by query, page, country, device and date. For B2B teams working across Belgium and Europe, we suggest comparing relevant markets and reviewing English and French pages separately.

A simple low-hanging-fruit workflow is:

  • Find relevant queries with steady impressions
  • Look for average positions roughly between 8 and 20
  • Check which page Google connects with the query
  • Improve the page’s answer, proof and title tag

For example, a page ranking around position 14 for “website maintenance Brussels” may need clearer benefits, client proof and a more direct title. It may not need a completely new content plan.

Inspect Important URLs Before Guessing

The URL Inspection Tool answers a very direct question: what does Google see when it looks at this page? Paste in the full URL, then check whether the page is indexed, which canonical URL Google selected and whether the page can appear in search results.

Use the live test after a meaningful update. It can confirm that Google can currently access the page and that no technical block is getting in the way. It does not promise instant rankings, sadly. Even Google needs time to process its post.

Request indexing after publishing an important service page, resolving a serious issue or making a substantial update. Repeated requests for every small wording change are mostly just noise. If you launch a French-language service page, inspect it to confirm that it is accessible, indexable and correctly connected to its language version.

Keep Valuable Pages in Google’s Index

Indexing reports help us find out why pages are missing from Google. Not every exclusion is bad. Redirected URLs, duplicate pages and tagged archives often do not need to rank. Thank goodness, because most sites have more thin utility pages than anyone needs in search results.

Focus first on issues affecting business value:

  • Noindex tags on service, case study or location pages
  • Canonical tags pointing to the wrong URL
  • Redirect chains and soft 404 errors
  • Duplicate versions of key service pages
  • Pages discovered but not indexed

A missing core service page deserves more attention than an old thank-you page. For English and French versions, each page should normally have a clear self-referencing canonical URL and appropriate hreflang signals. That helps Google serve the right language to the right audience.

Turn Core Web Vitals Into Practical Fixes

Experience and Core Web Vitals reports highlight real-world usability problems. Largest Contentful Paint reflects loading speed, Interaction to Next Paint reflects responsiveness, and Cumulative Layout Shift measures unexpected movement on the page.

These measures are not a magic SEO button. Still, a slow or jumpy website can frustrate potential clients and make a polished B2B brand feel less polished. A contact form moving while someone tries to submit it is memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Start by identifying affected groups of pages, then test representative URLs with PageSpeed Insights. We usually prioritise oversized images, unnecessary scripts, slow hosting, unoptimised fonts and unstable page elements. Resolving major issues before Q4 campaign traffic arrives gives your team more breathing room.

Protect Trust and Build a 90-Day Plan

Security Issues can flag hacked content, malware or deceptive pages. Manual Actions indicate that Google believes a site may have breached its spam policies. If an alert appears, confirm the issue, investigate how access was gained, remove malicious content and files, update vulnerable plugins and passwords, then request a review only once the site is genuinely clean.

A WordPress site with outdated plugins can suddenly publish spam pages for unrelated keywords. Search Console may reveal the problem, but it cannot clean the site or prevent another attack. Regular updates, backups, access controls and monitoring matter, especially when enquiries and reputation are on the line.

Keep the routine manageable. Each month, review promising queries, inspect priority pages after substantial changes, check Indexing reports for high-value errors and monitor performance after updates. One improved service page, one resolved indexing issue and one speed fix can deliver more value than a spreadsheet full of warnings nobody has prioritised.
